First introduced in 1981, the Nissan Maxima is a popular sedan to this day. Comfortable and capable, there's a reason it has been around for over 35 years. The Nissan Maxima proves that you don't need to shell out top dollar for luxury features. Nissan knows how to make a ride like no other, and the Nissan Maxima is living proof. It's luxurious, fun to drive, and safe; in fact, the Nissan Maxima is one of the safest vehicles on the road. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration awarded the Nissan Maxima a five-star rating in every category: overall safety, frontal crash rating, side crash rating, and rollover. In addition, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded it a Top Safety Pick+. You're in good hands in a Nissan Maxima.

Trim Levels

The 2017 Nissan Maxima is available in five different trim levels: S, SV, SL, SR, and Platinum. Each trim level draws its power from a 3.5-liter V6 engine, which produces 300 horsepower and 261 pound-feet of torque, and gets 21/30 city/highway mpg. Each is paired with front-wheel drive and an efficient continuously variable transmission.

Although the base trim, the Nissan Maxima S is anything but dull. The 8-inch touchscreen has Apple CarPlay compatibility (although no Android Auto) and a navigation system, and Bluetooth connectivity lets you link up any Bluetooth compatible device to the eight-speaker sound system. The two USB ports will help keep your devices charged, and the rearview camera makes parking and reversing easier than ever.

The SV trim adds a few features to help give an even more comfortable drive. The heated front seats keep you warm in the winter, and two-way power lumbar support and extendable thigh support gives a comfortable ride for drivers of all shapes and sizes. The heated outside mirrors boost visibility in all conditions, and the front and rear parking sensors make parking easier still.

The SL comes with a host of added safety features, including forward collision warning with automatic braking, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and adaptive cruise control. The interior of the SL is cheaper than lower trims, thanks to its active engine sound enhancement and active noise cancellation, and the quieter interior lets you better enjoy the 11-speaker Bose audio system.

The sportiest trim, the SR is the choice for drivers who love putting the pedal to the metal and hearing the engine roar. The sport-tuned suspension responds to the lightest touch, and the added paddle shifters give you the feel of gear ratios with the efficiency of a CVT. In addition to the upgraded suspension, Active Ride Control, Active Trace Control, and active engine braking all help use the car's brakes to keep you on your intended path. It keeps the heated front seats from lower trims, but adds ventilation to them as well, keeping you comfortable at any temperature.

The Nissan Maxima tops out with the luxurious Platinum trim. The Platinum is the easiest trim to park, thanks to its 360-degree parking camera system. It's also the most comfortable, with driver memory settings, a power-adjustable steering wheel, and premium diamond-quilter leather upholstery.

 Nissan Maxima vs Nissan Sentra

The auto engineers at Nissan know what they're doing; the best competitor to the Nissan Maxima is the Nissan Sentra. While each have their pros and cons, neither is strictly better. It all depends on what the driver is looking for. The Nissan Maxima is a full-size sedan that gives a luxury experience. It is more spacious than the Nissan Sentra, making it a better choice for a family sedan, and offers more available features. By contrast, the Nissan Sentra is a subcompact sedan. Its smaller size means that it is maneuverable and nimble, and is great for city driving. The Nissan Sentra is also a better first car, thanks to its lower price point. If you still can't decide, we're happy to help you figure out which one is best for your lifestyle.
